No fewer than three persons died in Asaba, Delta state following a torrential rainfall that swept them into uncovered drains along Nnebisi, Okpanam road in the early hours of Friday.
It was gathered that the victims, a middle aged man, and two teenagers, were trapped in the heavy downpour which started at about 5:30am with heavy wind, and in their struggle to get off the hook, the frightening power of the flood swept them into the uncovered drains where they were, however, rescued by onlookers, unfortunately, they sustained degrees of injuries, and were taken to a nearby clinic where they were later confirmed dead by the doctor.
Investigation revealed that the uncovered drains had over times wreaked deaths on unsuspecting pedestrians, especially during rainfall in Asaba, But the state Commissioner for Environment, Barr,John Nani Who Spoke to DAILY POST in Asaba said, “the situation is currently being taken care of by this present administration, the contractor who did the Job, was in our time, so the Okowa-led administration is doing a lot in Asaba.”
Further investigation revealed that whenever it rains within Okpanam road, Nnebisi road, pedestrians including commuters suffer untold difficulties and pains, and most times, they are either injured, or their vehicles damaged.
But the doctor in at the clinic, Dr. John Osekwu who confirmed the dead of the victims to DAILY POST said, “it is unfortunate that the victims could not make it, they later died at about 12:30pm following severe injuries including bleeding from their noses.”
A resident, Emeka Okonta who spoke to DAILY POST said, ” the government should put in more efforts in Okpanam roads, Asaba to alleviate the sufferings of the people when it rains, passengers pay higher fare to Keke riders, to go to Okpanam roads is difficult. “
