AWLA: Management of Stress And Depression Among Female Lawyers

African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), Rivers State Chapter held a health awareness seminar on “Management of Stress and Depression Among Female Lawyers” on the 12th of March, 2020 at NBA House, No. 1 Bank Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Dr. Kemi Oluwatayo who was one of the key note speakers stressed the need for women to always take good care of themselves as they are prone to stress and depression because of family, work and societal pressures.

Dr. Kemi Oluwatayo is a seasoned psychiatrist of the Department of Psychiatry with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt, Rivers State. In her speech, she emphasized on the need for women to always seek for help each time they notice any of the signs of depression.

According to her, some symptoms of depression include; irritability, loss of interest in sex, work or other activities previously enjoyed, weakness, low self esteem amongst others. She encouraged women to always seek for help early once they experience one or more of symptoms of depression.

The high point of the seminar was the practical demonstration of how to relax with some deep breathing exercises and have a refreshing sleep. Coping skills and how to outsource stress was also taught. During the question and answer session female lawyers freely voiced out their concerns and received practical solutions on how to solve them.

Causes of depression includes, loss of loved ones, relationship, investment e.t.c.

She observed that Nigerians don’t rest even when they travel for holiday.

On a final note she stated “You can do anything but not everything”. Dont force it. Let life be a big let go! God opens millions of bud everyday without forcing it.

The secretary of the Rivers State Chapter of ALWA, Mrs Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire (MCArb), stated that the essence of organizing this seminar is to encourage women reach their full potential while staying healthy.

According to her, women are always at the forefront of family affairs, taking care of everybody while no one takes care of them (women) So, the seminar is to take care of AWLANS who are always at the forefront of advocating for the betterment of children and women in the country and beyond.

The seminar was brought to a close as AWLANS unwinded by celebrating the birthday of their secretary.
