Sensitization Forum of Stakeholders on Improving The Environment Condition of Waste Management in Rivers State

Improving the environment condition in River State through waste management enterprise development for women and youth is a project facilitated by Centre for Creative Development Strategies (CCDS) and supported by the Embassy of France in Nigeria.

Centre for Creative Development Strategies (CCDS), based in the city of Port Harcourt is a Non Governmental Organization founded sometimes in 2006 and registered under Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in 2009. Its mission is to derive a new era of creative, innovative and sustainable development strategies that will stimulate the positive social change, economic growth and empowerment of the most vulnerable groups.

The organization is also working with the likes of National Coalition of Gas Flaring and Oil Spills in the Niger Delta (NACGOND), Arise for Gender and Livelihood Initiative (ALIVE), Dawn of Life Foundation (DOLF), Support for Mankind Initiative and Collaborative Living and Development Initiative (COLIDEIN) to advocate for a healthy environment where the women and youth are empowered to convert solid waste to wealth in Rivers State.

The Stakeholders forum which was held on the 13th of August, 2020 by 10:00am at the 3rd floor, NUJ Centre, off Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State and anchored by Deborah Onyeagba. The Director of Centre for Creative Development Strategies (CCDS), Mrs Nancy Iheduru gave a background knowledge of what the organization is, and the project overview which was followed by a presentation made by Mr Henry B. Amadi on Facts on Solid Waste Management in Rivers State using the past, present and future understanding of River State solid waste management.

It was discovered that one of the greatest challenge facing the environment is municipal solid waste management, inefficient collection method, insufficient coverage of the collection system and improper disposal. Another challenge faced by environmental agencies which includes lack of institutional arrangement, insufficient financial resources, absence of bylaws and standards.

The stakeholders were divided into three groups namely Government, CSOs/Media and the Market Leaders/Associations. They had a group discussions which bothers on the subject matter and were made to discuss extensively.

The stakeholders forum came to an end after a general photograph session, and feedback taken from the stakeholders with a light refreshments in the afternoon.
