The ENDSARS protest is gathering storm and just like the Arab spring did, if nothing is done urgently the protests will throw this country into total chaos, anarchy and collapse. A situation that will blow no one any good including the youths of this country and the oppressive elders and institutions they are protesting against.
The situation has become so dicey and warrants concerted swift reactions and actions by the President and Commander in Chief of the armed forces and all the Governors of this country who would be making a stitch in time to save nine and the nation by coming out to engage the protesting youths and assuage their fears and win back their confidence. Hiding or keeping aloof will not solve the problem but rather will exacerbate it.
President Buhari should make a national broadcast this night or early tomorrow morning pronouncing both SARS and SWAT disbanded. First thing first. He should let the youths know that all those who can establish abuse cases against any SARS officer or operative should proceed to a presidential panel of Inquisition that will be set up in every state and offenders to be made to face the law including dismissal from police and possible jail terms for the crimes against the innocent citizens.
Since hardship, unemployment, high cost of living and institutionalised corruption and insecurity are some of the ills the protesters are agitating against, it will be good that the President touched on them and all the other requests the protesters had variously elaborated since the protests began. So the youths would want the president to reverse petrol prices, promise to revamp the refineries, reopen universities, order police men on the roads to stop extorting monies from motorist or leave out road blocks completely, sign electoral reform bill awaiting his consent, sponsor a bill to cut salaries and emoluments of the President, governors legislators, ministers, and Government officials, announce economic bail out packages for youths and students like one digit loans without collaterals, bursary awards for students, higher NYSC salaries that can help graduates save enough money to start off businesses if they fail to secure employment after NYSC and agric loans for youths ready to go into agriculture.
The president should summon an emergency NEC and FEC meetings and outline palliative packages that will be targeted at alleviating the harsh economic conditions of Nigerian youths of today.
These times call for action and not inaction. And reconciliatory actions and not that of coercion as in bullying and harrassment of the protesting youths. Any attempt at using brute force against the protesters will prolong the protests and lead to total anarchy and collapse of the Nigerian state.
Finally the Presidency should back the National Assembly in their current bold quest to attempt a national constitution amendment for which the Omo Agege led committee had started collecting submissions. This country needs to be restructured and a new constitution made to accommodate the aspirations and inspirations of all Nigerian peoples.
The time is now for action!
The president should act fast!
The governors should act in their various states too!
Let us join hands and save our country from anarchy and total collapse.
Long live the Federal Republic Of Nigeria!
Long live all Nigerians.
