We must all agree that the demise of Professor Uchenna Ikonne is painful and heartbreaking. He was indeed a fine gentleman and would have made a wonderful governor considering his wealth of experience, but death snatched him away.
The incident has happened and the PDP needs to brace up, clean the tears, lick its wound and re focus on winning the 2023 election in Abia State.
The question on everyone’s lips now is will the PDP stick to Umunneato arrangement or will the party finally throw its gubernatorial ticket to Abia North that have been agitating for the position.
Is this not the time to correct the political ill feeling that is obviously deep within the Abia North PDP family or will the party continue rubbing salt on the injury of Abia North people.
If I am to advise Abia PDP on the way forward, I will advise them that this is the time to change course, get away from the things that will divide the party more, reconcile now and move the gubernatorial ticket to Abia North.
This move will unite the party and increase its chances of winning the 2023 governorship election in Abia State considering the lack of time.
Abia North has strong political heavy weights that can fly the flag and win the election for the party.
They have people like the current deputy governor Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Senator Emma Nwaka, and even the current running mate to the late Governorship candidate Hon Okey Igwe as well as several qualified people from Abia North.
The party must run away from fielding political neophytes at this time because the marketing timeframe is very short and focus on giving their ticket to someone who is already experienced, who has the contact inside and outside the state and who has the fund for the election.
Despite the challenges faced by the party in the state, the party still has a good chance to win the election if it fields the right candidate and Abia north has enough of them.
