Devastation As Ariaria Trader, Onyeka Okonkwo Loses Goods Worth Over 50 million naira to Theft

A heart-wrenching story has emerged from Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State, as Mr. Okonkwo Onyeka, a trader whose shop, HUMBLE COMMUNICATIONS, situated opposite Access Bank, Ogbo Osisi Ariaria, battles unimaginable despair following the second catastrophic theft at his business in just over a year.

According to Mr. Onyeka, thieves broke into his shop on the night of Saturday, November, and made away with goods worth over ₦50 million. Phones of various brands, including iPhones, Samsung, Infinix, Tecno, and Redmi, were among the stolen items, leaving his business in ruins. He discovered the tragedy on Sunday morning when he came to the shop to hand over an item to someone, only to find it completely emptied.

The thieves gained entry into the shop by breaking through the ceiling, allowing them access to the premises.

“This is the second time in a year and three months,” Onyeka revealed in a WhatsApp chat and phone conversation, his voice laden with pain and hopelessness.

“The first time was unbearable, but this… I’m finished. Nothing is left for me. I owe banks and my suppliers. I don’t know how to survive this,” he added.

The gravity of his situation has pushed him to the brink, with Mr. Onyeka confessing to colleagues that he has contemplated ending his life. His colleagues, deeply alarmed by his distress, shared his contact details with our reporter to raise awareness about his plight.

The theft is not just a blow to Onyeka’s livelihood but also a reflection of the larger security challenges facing traders in Ariaria International Market. Despite being one of the largest markets in West Africa, stories like Onyeka’s are all too common, with traders losing their investments overnight to thieves.

Mr. Onyeka’s emotional plea calls for immediate intervention. He has reached out to the administration of Ariaria International Market who up till now are yet to revert to him or visited the said place. He’s also reaching out to government agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to come to his aid and help him rebuild his life.

“This is my livelihood. It’s not just about the goods but my ability to provide for my family, repay my debts, and regain my dignity. Please, I need help,” he implored.

As his story spreads, it serves as a sobering reminder of the struggles small business owners face in a volatile environment. The question now is whether the authorities of Ariaria International market, government and society at large will rise to the occasion to prevent another life from being lost to despair.

The clock is ticking for Mr. Onyeka, and he can’t afford to wait any longer.
