Member Representing Isuikwuato/ Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, has called on the leadership of the National Assembly to set up a special adhoc committee to investigate the activities of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria.

This call comes amidst growing concerns about the role of NGOs and CSOs in Nigeria, particularly in the Northern region. Recent allegations that some NGOs may be involved in illicit activities, including sponsoring terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, have raised serious questions about their operations and impact on local communities.

It would be recalled that a US Congressman has recently exposed USAID for allegedly sponsoring Boko Haram, further highlighting the need for an urgent and thorough investigation into the activities of NGOs and CSOs in Nigeria. Hon. Ogah has expressed grave concerns about the presence of private jets owned by NGOs in Borno State, asking “What are they doing there?”

Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, in his submission at the floor of the house during plenary, said the special adhoc committee will be tasked with investigating the activities of NGOs and CSOs in Nigeria, with a particular focus on those operating in the Northern region. The committee will examine the sources of funding, operations, and impact of these organizations on local communities, as well as their compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations.

The investigation will aim to answer key questions, including:

  1. What are the sources of funding for NGOs and CSOs operating in Nigeria?
  2. What are the operations and activities of NGOs and CSOs in the Northern region?
  3. What is the impact of NGOs and CSOs on local communities in Nigeria?
  4. Are NGOs and CSOs operating in compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations?

The establishment of the special adhoc committee is a critical step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in the operations of NGOs and CSOs in Nigeria.
