African Women Lawyers Association, AWLA (Nigeria) Rivers State Chapter Opens Sexual Harassment Help Desk In Law Faculty of Rivers State University

Rivers State Chapter of the African Women Lawyers Association Celebrates International Day of The Girl Child

The Rivers State Chapter of African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria has established a sexual harassment help desk at the Law Faculty of Rivers State University on the 11th of October, 2021.

The sexual harassment help desk was unveiled during the celebration of the International Day of The Girl Child at the faculty of law in Rivers State University.

Dr. Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire, Esq lamented the increasing rate of sexual harassment of the girl child on daily basis globally, in Nigeria and especially in Rivers State.

She said it is imperative to establish this help desk to reduce the numbers of unrecorded sexual harassment cases in the state and in schools. It is because, victims are not aware of how and what to do whenever they are sexually harassed by people or persons especially those they are familiar with that makes them to always keep quiet and bury the harassment in their minds. But, with the help of this desk, victims can easily reach us whenever they are sexually harassed without any fear of intimidation.

Rivers State AWLA coordinator, Dr. Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire, Esq stated that, the establishment of the sexual harassment help desk was to help both the female and the male students that are sexually harassed especially in school, their homes or work places to speak up and break the culture of silence.

The victims of any form of sexual harassment from fellow students, lecturers, etc will document it with time, location, where the harassment happened, the exact words or action that constitutes the harassment in the register which was also provided by the advocacy group.
