Nigerian Bar Association, Ahoada Branch Holds Her Fund Raising Luncheon And Lecture Series To Mark End of The Year As Hon.Justice Frank Onyiri Delivers On Effective Appellate Practice

Ahoada Branch of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), held a fund raising luncheon and lecture series to mark her end of year activities today, 18th of December, 2023.
The Chairman of NBA Ahoada Branch, Dr Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire welcomed the guests, and thanked them for finding time to grace the occasion.

In his opening remark, the chairman of the continuing legal education (CLE) Commitee and the event’s planning committee chairperson, Agent Ihua-Maduenyi,Esq expressed happiness at the turnout. He encouraged the attendees, emphasizing the need for lawyers to continuously seek knowledge, and stated that successful legal practice was anchored on the wheels of continuous legal education to meet up with the evolving trends in legal practice.

In there goodwill message, the United Capital PLC, an affiliate of UBA PLC represented by Mrs. Ida Tonye Duruzor congratulated the branch on her end of year program. She introduced her company’s new products/services to the audience, informing them of the packages and benefits to be enjoyed from partaking in the United Capital Plc programs and offers.

The guest speaker, the Hon. Justice Frank Onyiri, Judge, Customary Court of Appeal, Rivers State
enlightened the audience on Effective Appellate Practice: A Tool for Attainment of Justice. He highlighted the appellate jurisdiction of courts, and expressed the procedure for appeal, reminding legal practitioners that one could not have more grounds of appeal than the issues for determination. The Hon. Justice also stated that not receiving the Certified True Copy (CTC) of a lower court’s decision, was not a good and substantial enough reason to grant an application for extension of time, as most lawyers were known to rely on that. He also said that clients’ sickness was not also a good enough reason, except such sickness is substantiated with medical reports.

Following the paper presentation, comments and contributions were made by the chairman of the CLE, Agent Ihua-Maduenyi, past chairman of Ahoada branch, current chairman Isiopko branch Dr.Casmir Nwankwo, past chairman of NBA, Isiokpo branch Dr.Promise Iwezor, Past chairman and elder of Ahoada branch, Rogers Agbesor, Esq. C.W Jerome Esq.and other legal practitioners. The event proceeded to questions and answers session. After which the Hon. Justice Onyiri presented a cheque in support of the fund raising, on behalf of his colleague, the Hon. Justice Augusta Kingsley-Chukwu of the Rivers State High Court. After which, the fundraising continued.
In her closing remark the NBA Ahoada Chairman thanked all attendees and donors and promised that the NBA Ahoada Branch was one to watch in the future.

Present at the occasion were Hon. Justice Frank Onyiri, who was also the guest speaker, Chairmen of NBA branches, members of the Customary Court and Judges of the Customary Court of Appeal, the former chairman of Ahoada branch, respected Mr. I. O. Agbesor and other senior members of the bar; magistrates, including His Distinguished Worship, Mr. Lawrence Ishikaku. Other respected personalities were Morrison A. Morrison, Dr. Cashmia Ofurum, Mr. C. W. Jerome, Mr. Promise Iwezor, and many others legal practitioners from Ahoada, Isiokpo, Port Harcourt and other branches of the NBA in Rivers State.
Thereafter,
luncheon cake was cut and the participants took to the dance floor to relax and celebrate the success of year 2023.
