Resilience in the Face of Challenges: An Independence Day Message by Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire, Ph.D, MCArb

Distinguished Members of the NBA Ahoada Branch,

As we mark yet another Independence Day, we reflect on the journey of our beloved nation, Nigeria. Sixty-four years after gaining freedom, we find ourselves in a period of unprecedented challenges, economic difficulties, insecurity, and deepening social inequalities. The weight of these issues is felt by all, including us in the legal profession.

However, as we celebrate this day, let us remember that true strength lies in our tenacity. Nigeria has faced turbulent times before, and each time, we have risen—together—stronger and more resolute. Our role as lawyers is not just to navigate these challenging times, but to be beacons of hope and justice for the people we serve, especially for the underserved in our communities.

Now, more than ever, we must stand firm, guided by our core principles of integrity, equity, and fairness. In the courtroom, in our communities, and even in our personal lives, let us continue to advocate for the rule of law, protect the rights of the vulnerable, and ensure that no voice goes unheard.

The road ahead may be long, but with determination and collective effort, we can overcome. Just as Nigeria was birthed through struggle and perseverance, so too shall we weather this storm, striving towards a future of greater prosperity, justice, and unity for all.

Happy Independence Day, and may we continue to forge ahead in hope and service to our nation and our good Lord who is not a debtor will reward the works of our hand and selfless services bountifully.

Thank you and God bless us all.
