Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) has been officially launched at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), marking a significant milestone in the country’s drive towards innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial development.
The landmark project is a collaborative initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the Abia State Government.
Speaking at the inauguration, Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the UniPod as a strategic investment aimed at transforming Nigeria’s higher education sector into a catalyst for innovation, research commercialization, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
According to the Vice President, universities must evolve beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to become centres for enterprise development, technology transfer, and industrial competitiveness.
Delivering the keynote address titled “Science Meets Enterprise,” Governor Alex Otti, OFR, said the decision to establish Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod in Abia demonstrates the confidence reposed in the state by the Federal Government and the UNDP as a growing hub for economic transformation and industrial development.
“The siting of the Manu-Tech UniPod in Abia speaks eloquently to the institutional faith the UNDP and the Federal Government of Nigeria have reposed in our state and the enormous potential it holds as an engine of growth and economic prosperity,” Governor Otti stated.
The Governor explained that his administration fully supported the project because it aligns with its economic development blueprint, which prioritizes innovation, entrepreneurship, industrialization, and job creation.
He expressed optimism that the facility would redirect academic research towards solving real-life challenges and producing commercially viable innovations.
“With the launch of the UniPod, researchers, scientists, students, and academics will increasingly focus on practical solutions with everyday applications rather than research conducted solely for academic promotion,” he said.
Governor Otti commended the Federal Government, TETFund, and the UNDP for partnering with the state on the transformational initiative, describing them as reliable development partners committed to expanding opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs.
Also speaking, the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, said the Manu-Tech UniPod forms part of a broader national innovation ecosystem designed to connect education, research, enterprise, manufacturing, and technology.
She noted that the initiative would enable universities to become engines of economic growth and global competitiveness while promoting innovation-driven development across Nigeria.
Ms. Attafuah applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Federal Ministry of Education, TETFund, and the Abia State Government for their commitment to advancing innovation and sustainable development.
She particularly commended Governor Alex Otti for his vision of transforming Abia into Nigeria’s leading destination for manufacturing and industrial innovation.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Ursala Akanwa, described the commissioning as a defining moment in the institution’s history.
She said the project reflects the university’s mandate to deploy science, technology, and innovation in advancing agriculture, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and national development.
Professor Akanwa thanked the Federal Government, the Ministry of Education, UNDP, TETFund, and the Abia State Government for selecting MOUAU to host Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod.
The event attracted top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers, academics, development partners, and other stakeholders.
The Manu-Tech UniPod is expected to provide students, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs with access to advanced manufacturing equipment, prototyping facilities, innovation support services, and industry mentorship, enabling them to transform research ideas into market-ready products and commercially viable enterprises.
