UMUAHIA — Discussions surrounding representation and security in Abia North Senatorial District took center stage during the latest edition of the broadcast program Bourdex Hour, as Labour Party (LP) Senatorial Candidate, Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha (Bourdex), shared his perspective on legislative duties and community leadership.
Reflecting on the qualities required of a federal lawmaker, Bourdex called for greater mindfulness in public discourse, pointing to past remarks by incumbent representative Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as an example of statements that can inadvertently mischaracterize constituents.
Addressing the responsibilities of representing the five local government areas of Abia North—Arochukwu, Bende, Ohafia, Isuikwuato, and Umunneochi, Bourdex emphasized that leadership requires empathy and constructive engagement, especially during periods of public tension.
Speaking on the role of a senator in defending the interests of the people, Bourdex noted that elected officials must exercise restraint and care in how they speak about the communities they serve.
“We must stop treating security as something people simply have to accept,” Bourdex stated during the broadcast. “About leadership, as we conclude, there is something even bigger at stake. Who speaks for the people? That matters. What that person says about his people also matters. How that person behaves when his people are misunderstood or under pressure matters enormously.
“He gently brought attention to past public comments attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, noting that describing constituents broadly in connection with separatist groups like IPOB can lead to unwarranted stigmatization.
“People must not vote for a man who is caught in between cultures,” Bourdex observed. “And I’m referring to Orji Uzor Kalu—a man who we must not forget tagged his people, my people, as IPOB terrorists. A representative must never casually stigmatize the people he represents. A senator must understand the weight of his words. When questions of security arise, we must distinguish criminals from innocent citizens, defend due process, and protect lives.
“Bourdex argued that the district requires representation capable of articulating local concerns clearly and diplomatically, ensuring that public office is treated as a sacred trust rather than a personal platform.
Clearing up common misconceptions regarding the scope of legislative power, Bourdex clarified that a senator does not exercise direct executive control over military or police deployments. He noted that promising direct command over security agencies would be inaccurate.
Instead, drawing from his background in telecommunications, he outlined how a senator can meaningfully influence security through the core functions of Legislation, Appropriation, Oversight, and Representation:
Legislation: Updating legal frameworks to address cybercrime, identity theft, data privacy, and modern digital threats.
Appropriation: Advocating for federal budget allocations toward essential rural infrastructure, emergency response systems, and telecommunications.
Oversight: Monitoring the implementation of federally funded security programs to ensure efficiency and accountability.
Representation: Actively engaging federal security institutions to bring constituency concerns to official attention.
He highlighted that security is closely tied to economic well-being, noting that fear directly impacts agricultural productivity and local trade. “Insecurity is an economic issue,” Bourdex explained. “When a farmer is hesitant to go to the farm, food production suffers. When traders cannot safely transport produce, commerce slows down. Telecommunications, roads, and electricity are not just individual projects—they form an interconnected ecosystem that supports community safety.
Addressing questions about surveillance technology and civil liberties, Bourdex cautioned against systems that intrude unnecessarily upon private lives or risk political misuse.
“Security should never become an excuse for indiscriminate intrusion into people’s private lives,” he noted. “If public confidence in security infrastructure collapses, citizens become hesitant to cooperate. We must protect citizens while also respecting their legitimate rights.
“He proposed a balanced three-pillar approach to district security:
Technology: Utilizing reliable communication channels, digital surveillance, and location-mapping capabilities.
Community Intelligence: Partnering with traditional rulers, Town Union Leaders, and local community structures who possess deep knowledge of local geography and daily patterns.
LawfulLawful Enforcement: Ensuring all intelligence feeds directly into authorized professional security agencies to prevent jungle justice or arbitrary abuse.
Concluding his remarks, Chief David Ogba Onuoha reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of Abia State, encouraging voters across Abia North to support Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, and Labour Party candidates in upcoming elections to maintain developmental alignment across state and federal levels.
