International Day of The Girl Child 2026: SHOGNA Foundation International Demands End to Child Marriage, Full Investment in Girls' Rights

On this 11th of October, as the world commemorates the International Day of the Girl Child, SHOGNA Foundation International stands in solidarity with every girl whose courage defies limitation and whose dreams transcend barriers. This day is not merely a celebration but a resounding declaration that girls are not a vulnerable afterthought but a formidable force for transformation. From our base in Umuahia to communities across Nigeria and beyond, we have witnessed how a girl empowered with education, safety, dignity and opportunity becomes a catalyst for change: leading in science, championing justice, building enterprises and reimagining the future. Yet millions remain shackled by child marriage, exclusion from education, gender-based violence, limited healthcare and the digital divide.

This year’s theme, “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights!” resonates deeply with our mission, because child marriage is not culture, it is crisis. It robs a girl of her childhood, truncates her education, imperils her health, silences her voice and condemns her to poverty. We have seen brilliant girls whose aspirations to code, to teach, to heal and to lead were extinguished the moment marriage was arranged.

At the SHOGNA Foundation, we affirm unequivocally that investing in a girl is not benevolence but a strategic and generational investment in peace and prosperity.

Consequently, the SHOGNA Foundation remains unwavering in confronting this injustice through advocacy, education and action — creating safe, inclusive and confidence-building learning spaces, providing transformative mentorship and life skills, demanding uniform enforcement of eighteen years as the non-negotiable minimum age for marriage across all states without exception under customary or religious law, and strengthening birth registration, school retention and social protection systems that help families choose education over early marriage.

We applaude the government of H.E. Dr Alex Otti, the Executive Governor of Abia State, as education and training programs receive high levels of funding and priority.

On this momentous occasion, we thus issue a clarion call to all stakeholders: parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, policymakers, educators, development partners, and especially boys and men, to become resolute allies, for progress requires collective courage. To every girl child: your rights are inalienable, your voice is powerful, your education is non-negotiable and your future is limitless. To our volunteers, partners and supporters: let us transcend rhetoric and translate awareness into tangible action by funding girls’ education, amplifying girl-led initiatives, protecting their spaces and institutionalizing their rights.

When we invest in girls, we fortify families, enrich communities and secure the destiny of nations.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child 2026.
